Thai Boys Await Resumption of Rescue Mission After First 4 Freed

First boys rescued from cave in northern Thailand after two-week ordeal

Thirty-five emergency doctors were on standby as the "exhausted" boys were flown by military helicopter or driven in ambulances to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital.

A little before 5pm local time (10am GMT) a fifth boy was reported rescued after a six-hour operation.

Expert divers entered the sprawling complex for the complicated and unsafe mission. Divers brought the first boy from the cave at around 5:40 p.m. local time, less than eight hours after the rescue operation started.

The rescue mission had called today "D-Day" because the water was at its lowest since the boys were discovered and heavy rains were forecast for later this week, giving them only four days to get all the boys out.

As per the reports, one of the four people rescued last night was the 25-year-old coach Ekapol Chanthawong. Surviving the entire trip is risky and the journey led to the unfortunate death of former Thai navy diver Saman Gunan earlier this week. But authorities have said it remains unclear how long the boys would have to remain inside.

The boys had to navigate through flooded passages that are no more than two feet wide in some areas.

Osottanakorn told reporters that the team had rehearsed the plan for several days, and had cleared a sizeable amount of the flooding from the cave.

"They insist they are ready to come out", Narongsak said Sunday of the rescue team.

Expert divers managed to get four of the 12 boys to safety on Sunday.

And the fact that not many teams have cap room could lead to some interesting contracts this summer. But more than perhaps any other working athlete in recent memory, James made that move years ago.

Somboon Sompiangjai, 38, the father of one of the trapped boys, said parents were told by rescuers ahead of Sunday's operation the "strongest children" would be brought out first.

As of Sunday, four boys were confirmed rescued from the cave, before the mission was paused, according to the BBC.

Narongsak said the operation on Monday went more smoothly than on Sunday and took two hours less, adding, "We think tomorrow we will do better than today and will succeed 100 percent".

The Wild Boars and their coach became trapped on June 23 when they set out to explore the vast cave complex after soccer practice, when a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels.

Musk came up with the idea to help rescue the youth soccer team trapped in a cave in Thailand.

Musk first tweeted about the boys trapped in the cave on 4 July after somebody asked him if he would assist. According to the Thai government, when they reached a spot that couldn't fit a person and an oxygen tank, the divers would take the boy's tank off his back while slowly guiding the boy through the narrow passages.

A multi-pronged rescue effort has been underway since they were found almost a week ago.

Still, the four were undergoing medical checks in a hospital in the provincial capital and were not yet allowed close contact with relatives due to fear of infections.

"Football's Coming Home. First Wild Boars Out", a headline on one online Thai paper said on Monday, referring to a song chanted by English soccer fans at the World Cup now underway in Russian Federation.
