US Ambassador says, President Trump plans to meet Queen Elizabeth II

Business Minister Sam Gyimah led demands among Tories while Labour insists Mrs May must condemn her ally

Speaking to British lawmakers on Wednesday, May said she found photos of children being held in cages "deeply disturbing".

It has been confirmed that US President Donald Trump will meet Queen Elizabeth II during his visit to the United Kingdom next month.

May's comments came during a weekly question session at the House of Commons, prompted by a question from Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) Westminster leader Ian Blackford.

Earlier this week, Kirstjen Nielsen, America's Homeland Security Secretary, insisted her country had "compassion" but stressed: "Parents who entered illegally are by definition criminals.By entering our country illegally often in unsafe circumstances, illegal immigrants have put their children at risk".

It is also expected that Trump will meet with UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

Britain's Stop Trump Coalition in London is already planning a protest for the president's upcoming visit. May said she will have a chance to discuss a range of issues with him during his visit.

Elizabeth, 92, the oldest monarch in British history, has met 11 of the 12 US presidents before Trump who have been in office since she ascended the throne in 1952.

Thousands of children have been separated from parents as part of the zero tolerance policy, which mandates that all asylum seekers who cross the border illegally be prosecuted.

But the PM stressed that the UK-US special relationship meant that she could fully air disagreements, which Britain had with American policy, with the President.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman told reporters last week that 1,995 children were separated from 1,940 adults who crossed the United States border without documents between April 19 and May 31.

Footage of children held in cages and crying for their parents has drawn condemnation in the past week.

The children, who are not charged with a crime, are separated as a result of their parents' criminal cases.

Originally the US President was invited for a full state visit but after an outcry, it was downgraded to a working visit.

The petition led to Parliament debating whether the government should rescind its invitation to Trump.
