Moms breastfeed in front of ICE headquarters to protest Trump immigration policies

Over the past 48 hours a who's who of Republican congressional leaders- and governors- have come forward to protest the Trump administration's policy of family separation at the border

Bowing to pressure from anxious allies, President Donald Trump abruptly reversed himself Wednesday and signed an executive order halting his administration's policy of separating children from their parents when they are detained illegally crossing the USA border. "We're going to keep families together but we still have to maintain toughness or our country will be overrun by people, by crime, by all of the things that we don't stand for and that we don't want", Trump said.

Asked about the possibility of an executive order on immigration, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters: "We'll keep you posted".

"We want to keep families together", he said. Nielsen is on her way to the White House to discuss the order with the president and his team.

Two people close to Nielsen said she was the driving force behind the turnabout that led to the new order keeping families together.

However, several Republican members of the House of Representatives briefed by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen about Trump's executive order say they they do not know if it will prevent family separations during detentions longer than 20 days.

"As parents we refuse sit by while the government removes children from their parents at the USA border", the organizers said when they announced the event.

First lady Melania Trump made a surprise trip to Texas to get a firsthand look at the crisis affecting children.

Trump threatens China with new tariffs on another $200 billion of goods
The tariffs announced by the White House on Friday hit more than 1,100 Chinese products with a rate of 25 percent. Benchmark U.S. crude was down $1 to $64.85 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Homeland Security @SecNielsen did a fabulous job yesterday at the press conference explaining security at the border and for our country, while at the same time recommending changes to obsolete & nasty laws, which force family separation.

The effort would mark a dramatic turnaround for an administration that has been insisting, wrongly, that it has no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of the law and a court decision.

Trump administration was said to be considering an executive order that would allow immigrant families who cross the border illegally to stay together longer than is now permitted. Other protesters, who included other parents, children and activists, waved signs as the mothers nursed.

Just the day before, Trump had claimed his administration's hands were tied without congressional action.

"We have no information that the executive order is going to help kids separated from parents already-it's heartbreaking".

The children are classified as unaccompanied minors, a legal term generally used for children who cross the border alone and have a possible sponsor in the USA willing to care for them.

Senate Republicans on Tuesday moved to end a political crisis inflicted on the party by President Trump by voicing support for an immigration bill that would end the separation of children from their parents and guardians at the border. Neither, though, did it require parents to be kept in detention, apart from their children.
