Trump repeats call to halt US-South Korea drills stirs unease among military & allies

"S. Korea and the USA have chose to suspend all planned activities of defensive exercise Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) that was scheduled for August following close cooperation", defense authorities announced on Tuesday.

The United States has formally suspended a major military exercise with South Korea that was scheduled for August. "The South and the U.S. plan to continue consultations over additional measures". "No decisions on subsequent war games have been made", Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said.

In an official announcement, the United States and South Korea have chose to suspend the Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) exercise slated for August, as part of Trump's promise to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

US soldiers and vehicles prepare to participate in the Ulchi Freedom Guardian near the inter-Korean border in Paju, north of Seoul on August 22, 2016.

Trump agreed to work with Kim toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, committed to provide the North with security guarantees and pledged to end "war games" with South Korea, which North Korea and China have long seen as provocative. On Monday, the two Koreas agreed to present their teams in a united procession at the opening and closing of the worldwide sporting tournament, while also forming "a unified team for some sports events", according to South Korean news agency Yonhap. These batteries turn any war scenario between North and South Korea into a nightmare where Seoul could lose tens of thousands of lives every hour.

Warming ties between North Korea and South Korea come as relations between North Korea and the United States have also improved after tension a year ago over the North's nuclear and missile programs.

Monday's announcement follows Trump's announcement last week after his summit with Kim that the United States would suspend joint military exercises with the South "unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should". "No decision has been made yet with regard to other [joint military] exercises", the authorities said. The military exercises cost assessment is yet a complex process that sometimes needs various spread over and military branches budgets of several years. The Hill reports the US and South Korea conduct three major exercises and some other smaller ones a year.

But senior Japanese government officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they are concerned the suspension of the military exercise could weaken deterrence provided by the United States.

-South Korea joint military drills. He said his understanding was that any suspension would involve only major military exercises and that regular training of USA forces in South Korea would continue, although final decisions were up to the Department of Defense.

I Corps kicks off Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise with South Korean partners last August.

North Korea is particularly sensitive to the involvement of nuclear-capable assets, including B-2 and B-52 bombers, and stealth fighters.

The announcement says all planning for the exercise has been stopped.
