China ‘expresses regret’ over USA withdrawal from UN Human Rights Council

Bolton on leaving Human Rights Council US doesn’t need ‘higher judge’ of our performance

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the USA decision. She lambasted the council for "its chronic bias against Israel" and lamented the fact that its membership includes accused human rights abusers such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Boycotting the councilThe council's 47 members are elected by the UN's General Assembly for a three-year period, and can only serve for two terms in a row.

"No one gloats over the United States' withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council".

It only joined in 2009 under President Barack Obama, and won re-election to the council in 2012.

The US and Australia cast the only "no" votes.

As of Wednesday, Israel was maintaining its status as an observer to the Council.

Israel's Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon called on "the moral majority at the UN to hold all of its institutions accountable".

Haley criticized the non-governmental organizations in a letter the day after she announced the US was exiting the council. Indeed, its decision to fully withdraw appears to be a rebuke of the council, in that it withdraws the US's ability to take a front seat in important global issues. "It's high time we're outta there". "The only thing worse than a council that does nearly nothing to protect human rights is a council that covers for human-rights abuses-and is therefore an obstacle to progress and an impediment to change".

US Ambassador to the United Nation Nikki Haley speaks at the US Department of State in Washington DC on June 19, 2018.

Since the United States is a member of the mainly Western group, a candidate or candidates will have to come from that group, known as the West European and Others Group. "Without strategic USA engagement at the council as a member, the U.S. loses a platform to influence the course of human rights globally for the better".

North Korea media focuses on global relations after Trump-Kim meet
White House staff said Trump's seat-of-the-pants changes on the day of the summit undercut their plans to roll out the agreement. For America's allies in Asia, the outcome of President Trump's summit meeting with Kim Jong-un has been decidedly mixed.

The United Nations is stressing that human rights are "a pillar" of the organization's work and its secretary-general wants all member states to "engage actively" in the Human Rights Council and other parts of the U.N.'s "human rights architecture". "Since its creation, the council has adopted more resolutions condemning Israel than against the rest of the world combined".

Dujarric said the council, which reviews the human rights records of United Nations, and special investigators who work on rights issues "play a critical role in protecting and promoting human rights across the world".

Twelve rights and aid groups, including Human Rights First, Save the Children and CARE, had earlier warned Pompeo the USA withdrawal would "make it more hard to advance human rights priorities and aid victims of abuse around the world".

The argument is the same: It is not the United Nations framework that is responsible for anti-Israel resolutions but the member states, and countries such as Venezuela or Qatar, that will continue to guarantee that Israel gets no fair shake, with the USA or without.

The letter says they were a contributing factor to the USA withdrawal from the council due to their attempts "to block negotiations and thwart reform". She says they tried to "block negotiations" and "thwart reform".

The United States has announced it is withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council saying the organisation is "not worthy of its name".

"The council's continued and well-documented bias against Israel is unconscionable", Pompeo said. The U.S. announced its withdrawal from the council on Wednesday, citing among other things its alleged anti-Israel bias.

Haley urged the groups to play a constructive, not destructive, role in human rights in the future.

"All delegations attach great importance to this body", said Chinese ambassador to the Geneva, Yu Jianhua.
