Rep. Sanford loses GOP primary, attacked for Trump criticism

Trump attacks Republican up for re-election with reference to affair

Sanford is in a tight race for the Republican nomination in South Carolina's 1st District on Tuesday.

However, Sanford has been critical of President Trump, most recently calling his tariff on aluminum and steel an "experiment with stupidity".

Trump was referencing Sanford's previous sex scandal when he tweeted of the congressman: "He is MIA and nothing but trouble".

Charleston County Republican Party executive committee member Cyndi Mosteller also believes President Trump's tweet was a factor in the outcome.

Parnell will face U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman in November.

During his concession speech, Sanford said disagreeing with the president on some issues may have cost him the election, but said he stands by every one of those decisions as a promise to his constituents.

Sanford lost a bid for a seventh House term in Tuesday's voting.

The Senate landscape will become more settled Tuesday night as well. And she reminded them who she thinks leads them: "We are the party of President Donald J. Trump". "With all politics being local, if you're not on the same page as the President and 85%-90% of your base is, you can see where that could cause a problem". And McMaster, the first statewide elected official in SC to endorse Trump for president while he was lieutenant governor, might not have ever become governor, he said.

By contrast, Trump said that Sanford "has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to [Make America Great Again]".

But while Trump remains very popular in the state, McMaster has been shadowed by a corruption probe involving a longtime political consultant. Governor Henry McMaster was the top vote-getter in the Republican primary, but did not get the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff.

McMaster, the former lieutenant governor, assumed the governorship a year ago after Nikki Haley resigned to become US ambassador to the United Nations.

He was serenaded with "Happy Birthday" at almost every green, and even after four consecutive bogeys the fans were supportive. The incident on Mickelson's 48th birthday brought to mind a similar episode by John Daly at the 1999 U.S.

Tuesday, 239,560 ballots were cast in the Democratic primary for governor and 367,036 on the GOP side.

Republican Sen. Dean Heller escaped what was shaping up to be a competitive primary challenge from businessman Danny Tarkanian when Trump asked Tarkanian to leave the race and run for the nomination for Nevada's 3rd District instead.

Stewart is an outspoken defender of Confederate symbolism.

"Sanford is the worst and has been against the President and our policies from Day One", the aide said. After serving three terms in the House, he later served as governor for eight years, but his tenure was marred by his disappearance for several days in 2009. He's called out the president for his rhetoric, saying he was "partially to blame" for the kind of incivility that led to the shooting at the GOP congressional baseball team's practice past year.

Wexton was the best-known and best-financed in the field, and was viewed as the Democratic Party's establishment choice. She had the endorsement of Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam. "But it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time". Arrington has built her campaign on her allegiance to Trump, tying Sanford to the #NeverTrump movement.

Democrats, with just 16 of the nation's governorships, view the seat as one of their top pickup opportunities. Sanford is a conservative member of the House Freedom Caucus, a group whose membership aligns themselves most closely with the president.

Democrats need to gain 23 seats to win the majority in the House.

LePage, in an interview with WCSH-TV on Tuesday, called the format "the most horrific thing in the world" and said he would probably not certify the results, and leave it to courts to decide.

ME voters were the nation's first to use a new voting system in a statewide election letting them rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one.

The system insured that counting was slow and winners hard to call.
