Phil Mickelson freestyles hole 13 of US Open Championship

Phil Mickelson appeared to have a rush of blood as he hit a still moving putt Saturday

Phil Mickelson caused quite the stir in Saturday's third round of the U.S. Open, putting a ball that was still in motion on the 13th green.

Phil Mickelson incurred a two-shot penalty for opting to hit his ball while it was still moving in a weird incident that led to a sextuple-bogey 10.

Upset at how things were going, Mickelson hit a bad putt on the 13th hole and the ball rolled past the hole. "I know it's a two-shot penalty". "I know it's a 2-shot penalty, and at that time I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over". That violation is an automatic two-stroke penalty.

"Phil really did want to understand how the rule operates because he didn't want to.as he said to me, 'Mike, I don't want to play in this championship if I should have been disqualified, '" Davis said. "I was playing it worse than most and wanted to get to the next hole eventually, which I did".

"No question it was going to go down into the same spot behind the bunker".

Mickelson's tee shot hit the fairway, but he missed the green with his next two approach shots. "I don't know if I was able to save a shot or not".

E3 2018: Xbox Scarlet Consoles May Arrive in 2020
Microsoft showcased a record 52 games at the E3 event including 18 console launch exclusives and 15 world premieres. The company has bragged the game's dynamic season of which you would ultimately experience a dramatic gameplay.

The incident will always dog the colourful and often controversial Californian - he later told critics to "toughen up" - but Mickelson's mad-cap moment was just the start on a insane day at Shinnecock Hills. "That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen".

The incident on Mickelson's 48th birthday brought to mind a similar episode by John Daly at the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

And he proudly pointed out that he took 11 drops at a tournament in 2006 before getting one he liked and went on to win the tournament. "I enjoy the challenge of this because we don't get to see it but once a year and sometimes it gets a little goofy sure".

It's a jaw-dropping move from Mickelson, and something that actually has happened before in a U.S. Open. "I've had an awesome day". He was serenaded with "Happy Birthday" at almost every green, and even after four consecutive bogeys the fans were supportive. At this rate, he'll just be glad to leave Shinnecock Hills in one piece. And if that's the way people took it, I apologize to them. It's something you might see at your home course with your mates or something.

Mickelson has made no secret in the past of his dislike for some Open setups, which might be one reason he's never won an Open.

"Usually we sell everything well in advance, but NY is a very savvy ticket market and we've seen a lot of sales on-site".
