Judge jails former Trump campaign chair Manafort ahead of trial

Paul Manafort was sent to jail Friday by a federal judge who said she couldn't turn a blind eye to claims that he attempted to tamper with witnesses, adding pressure on President Donald Trump's former campaign manager to cooperate with a United States probe of Russian election meddling.

US District Judge Amy Berman made the decision after prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the Russian Federation probe, alleged that Manafort and one of his associates had tried to tamper with witnesses in the case, US media reports.

"I can not turn a blind eye to this allegation", US District Judge Amy Jackson said.

While under house arrest, Manafort allegedly tried to use his former Russian fixer, Konstantin Kilimnik, to contact two witnesses in his money laundering case and persuade them not to make certain statements to investigators.

"Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign", Trump told reporters gathered at the White House on Friday.

Before the announcement, President Trump continued to distance himself from Manafort.

Manafort is due to go on trial in Washington in September and faces another trial on related charges in Virginia in July.

Manafort's legal defense fund asked in a Twitter post, "Why is he the target of a partisan investigation?" echoing a theme of Trump and his supporters that the Mueller inquiry is a political witch hunt.

Already, Mueller has secured the cooperation of Manafort's top business deputy Rick Gates, who also served on Trump's campaign and was associated with Trump's inner circle well after Manafort left the campaign.

Manafort had been confined to his home on electronic monitoring and other restrictions since he was first indicted October 27 during Mueller's probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. "No, I don't want to talk about that", the president responded - though he did say "I do want to see people treated fairly". Manafort pleaded not guilty to the charges in the superseding indictment that added the obstruction and conspiracy charges. "I can't take his cellphone", she said of Manafort.

Before, when Manafort was out on supervised release, Trump would have been faced with whether or not to pardon him following his trial. Richard Westling, an attorney for Manafort, rebutted that claim, asking the judge to consider additional bail conditions that would allow Manafort to remain on home confinement.

"Very unfair!" The president referred incorrectly to Manafort's pre-trial detention as a "tough sentence". Like Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign.

Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged Russian election interference, accuses him of trying to tamper with potential witnesses before the trial. They suggested the solution would be for prosecutors to identify their witnesses and then the judge can tell Manafort whom he cannot contact.

Mr Manafort's lawyers said in a response filed with the court that his "limited communications" did not "reflect an intent to corruptly influence a trial witness". The charges against Manafort in Washington include failing to register as a foreign agent for the pro-Russia Ukrainian government under former President Viktor Yanukovych. Mueller's office has described Kilimnik as a Russian intelligence asset who was active through the 2016 election.
