Donald Trump, Kim Jong Un prepare for Singapore summit

US President Donald Trump described the talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as a

US and North Korean officials are set to meet in Singapore to make final preparations for the summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump canceled the summit last month after both sides exchanged criticism but then revived the summit after tensions cooled. A US official says the leaders then plan to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers.

Earlier this month, Singapore's defense minister said the US trade threats were as disruptive to the global order as China's military deployments in the disputed South China Sea.

Earlier in the day, a team of USA negotiators arrived at the Ritz-Carlton hotel to meet with its North Korean counterparts to try to nail down final details for the summit, the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader. The nation also has repaired ties with China after a setback in late 2016, a shift reinforced by Lee's visit to Beijing in April.

Others include Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, who has been heavily involved in preparatory talks, and Kim Chang-son, who discussed protocol with the U.S.in Singapore for the last two weeks and accompanied Kim Jong-un on his itinerary.

One dispatch by the Korean Central News Agency said North Korea and the United States would exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing new relations, building a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism", achieving denuclearization and "other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".

"Thank you very much", Trump said to reporters, as he turned to enter the banquet hall.

Kim had "expressed his deep thanks to the Singaporean government for its honest cooperation of providing all conditions and best conveniences for the historic DRPK-US summit meeting", KCNA reported.

He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

Menendez spoke Sunday on ABC's "This Week" as President Donald Trump arrived in Singapore ahead of Tuesday's talks with Kim.

G7 summit fails to bridge gap as Trump left early
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a statement that "Russia is focused on other formats, apart from the G7". Trump fired back at the world leaders, attacking both Trudeau and Macron on Twitter the day before the summit.

Another still photo in the news clip showed him shaking hands with North Korean officials, with another showing him waving from outside the Air China 747 jumbo which brought him to Singapore.

Travelling with him were top officials including foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, defence minister No Kwang Chol and Kim Yong Chol, a close aide who has been instrumental in the diplomacy that culminated in Tuesday's summit.

The relative speed with which the state media got the news of Kim's arrival in Singapore out to the North Korean public suggests a certain level of confidence that the meeting will go well - or at least well enough.

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday.

At the table, Trump told his hosts: "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is also in Singapore, said in a tweet that Washington was "committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

South Korean president Moon Jae-in was not expected to arrive in Singapore on Tuesday, which also lowered expectations about whether a comprehensive peace treaty to end the Korean War would be formally signed.

A jet carrying Kim landed hours earlier.
