Trump whips up immigration storm over children

Blame game President Trump said over the weekend that this policy would be ended if Democrats supported his plan for a wall at the southern border

As for the almost 1,500 "lost" children, it turned out that the children entered the country as unaccompanied minors and were placed with sponsors who had possibly " gone off the grid " to reduce their deportation risk - not that the Trump administration had randomly misplaced them.

As with much to do with the federal government, it's complicated.

In this June 18, 2014 photo, two female detainees sleep in a holding cell, as the children are separated by age group and gender, at a US Customs and Border Protection center in Nogales, Arizona.

"Having enough detention space, along with terminating the Flores Settlement Agreement, would allow us to keep family units together until they are returned home", he told reporters during the press briefing.

Already, about 700 children were reportedly taken from their parents at the border between October and April as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal crossings.

This means, in effect, that parents who are apprehended crossing the border would be immediately separated from their children.

But, as The Times acknowledged, that is unrelated to the report on the illegal immigrant children for which the government can not account.

The children are considered unaccompanied minors. "This is long-standing laws that are just being enforced right now".

It was discovered in 2014 that ORR had released eight children to a child trafficker instead of family members. About 10% of the time, the minors are placed with people who aren't related to them.

As controversy grows over his administration's treatment of children separated from undocumented immigrant parents, Trump is seeking a political opening to damage his opponents and solidify his own support.

Under a court settlement that prohibits the long-term detention of illegal immigrant children, US authorities have placed tens of thousands of teenagers with parents or other relatives - or in foster homes, as a last resort.

The government doesn't know where the children are?

In retaliation, China threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on United States dollars 50 billion worth of U.S. exports. All the talk of reducing the massive U.S. trade deficit boils down to one issue - technology.

The opposing parties in the case, Flores v. Reno, agreed on terms requiring that unaccompanied children held in federal custody be placed in "the least restrictive" environment possible.

The parents say they have no idea where their children ended up, and the government is refusing to provide them information. In 1,475 cases, nobody picked up the phone.

HHS has said it has no legal responsibility to trace these children.

"There's no reason to believe that anything has happened to the kids", he said Tuesday. Often times when they call as a followup, illegal immigrants don't answer the phone.

Family separations increased in April when U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced his office was imposing a "zero tolerance" policy on migrants who enter the country illegally. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials declined to comment for this story.

Both Favreau and Muñoz argued that the Trump administration's policy of separating families at the border is different from the Obama administration's handling of unaccompanied children.

"If you cross the border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you".

Officially, the Trump administration claims this isn't a policy aimed at deterring illegal immigration.

Did the almost 1,500 immigrant children come with their parents? This is why the administration is ramping up the prosecutions - to produce more separations, creating that deterrent.

"The underlying policies. have not changed", White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller said Tuesday.

Referencing recent reports about the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) being unable to track down almost 1,500 unaccompanied alien children (UACs), and hundreds of illegal immigrant parents being separated from their children at the border, CNN asked the deep question: How could a mother so heartlessly share an image in which she is seen embracing her son?
