Trump pardons Dinesh D'Souza -- and hints of more celebrity pardons

Trump Says He'll Pardon Dinesh D'Souza

D'Souza reacted to the news by retweeting Trump's tweet saying his was treated "very unfairly" and by advertising his new movie. Trump said she was "unfairly treated" and "used to be my biggest fan in the world".

D'Souza also personally contributed $10,000 to the campaign of Republican Wendy Long, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate in NY in 2012. Individual contributions to any one candidate were limited to $5,000 at the time. D'Souza pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight months in a halfway house and five years' probation, along with a $30,000 fine.

D'Souza is a former policy analyst under President Ronald Reagan and a prolific author well known for works critical of former President Barack Obama. But he offered a more contrite statement when he entered his guilty plea. "Please accept this letter as my effort to correct the record Dinesh created by his false and misleading submissions to the Court regarding me, the extent and nature of his criminal conduct, and my relationship with our daughter, Danielle D'Souza".

His cause was taken up by some on the political right as an example of anti-conservative bias during the Obama administration.

Ted Cruz also weighed in, applauding the president for the pardon.

The former prosecutor tweeted earlier Thursday that he stands by the conviction.

D'Souza is the latest controversial right-wing figure to get a reprieve from the president.

Trump's decision to pardon D'Souza was viewed largely as a signal to longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen, who now faces an investigation into possible campaign finance violations, among other crimes.

The Republican president then told reporters on a flight to Houston he was also considering a pardon for Stewart, who was convicted in 2004 on charges of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and making false statements in an insider-trading probe.
