Go reboot your router - NOW!

FBI urges people to reboot routers to thwart hackers

The malware is able to collect information, exploit devices, block network traffic and render routers inoperable.

The FBI nonetheless is urging all small office and home router owners to reboot devices even if they were not made by one of the affected vendors. It says that many popular router brands were infected, including Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear and TP-Link.

However, the most worrying capability is that malware allows its controllers to wipe a portion of an infected device's firmware, rendering it useless. Compromised devices, however, remain infected. The most affected country is Ukraine, which recently has been the battleground for many such attacks originating from Russian Federation.

In a statement released on the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) on Friday, officials say the actors used a malware called VPNFilter to target routers. QNAP storage devices are also known to be affected.

LeBron James' playoff average in 15th season is crushing the competition
He was especially aggressive in the first half, when he piled up 25 points to help Cleveland build a double-digit lead. The Celtics have lost just one game in front of their home crowd in these playoffs.

The easiest way to protect your internet connection is to simply reboot your router.

"By turning it off and on it resets in a way that allows the Federal Bureau of Investigation to identify the devices that were infected", said Ed Stroz, Founder of Stroz Friedberg - Aon. According to investigators, the VPNFilter malware was created by the same Russian-linked hackers who infiltrated the Democratic National Committee ahead of the 2016 US presidential elections.

A reboot should also destroy part of the malware.

The FBI also recommends disabling remote management settings, enabling encryption, and upgrading your devices firmware.
