Subtropical Storm Alberto Moves North in Gulf

Flood watch in effect for South Florida as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads north

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for that area.

Alberto was expected to drop as much as 12 inches (30 cm) of rain, slamming an area from MS to western Georgia, the Miami-based hurricane center said.

Mark Bowen, the Bay County Emergency management director, said at a Sunday afternoon news conference that the concern isn't with storm surge due to the timing of landfall and the tides.

The primary (and most known) hazard from Subtropical Storm Alberto has always been, and still is, heavy rain.

Officials in one Florida Panhandle county say that Subtropical Storm Alberto will likely dump rain on the region, but they're less concerned about storm surge. These will be influenced by the remnants of what is now Subtropical Storm Alberto, our first tropical storm of the year.

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

In Taylor County, there are voluntary evacuations for those in coastal zones and beach communities, mobile homes, RV parks and low-lying areas.

Flood watch in effect for South Florida as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads north

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday with up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain forecast over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Centre in College Park, Maryland.

Heavy downpours were expected to begin lashing parts of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Sunday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said Sunday that tropical storm warnings cover the entire Florida Gulf Coast and inland portions of the Florida Panhandle as well as parts of coastal Alabama.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has gained an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, heading toward expected landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast.

"Locally heavy rainfall is forecast across western Cuba and over much of Florida and the northern Gulf coast into early next week", senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart said in Friday's tropical weather outlook. Because of expected deteriorating weather, the sandbag distribution points will not be open Sunday, the county said.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Cuba's western Pinar del Rio province, where heavy rains could trigger flash floods and mudslides, the NHC said.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, Alberto was centered about 165 miles west of Tampa and had maximum sustained wind of 50 mph.

The center of Subtropical Storm Alberto will likely reach the northern U.S. Gulf Coast Monday afternoon or evening. According to the paper, politicians at the time downplayed the storm's severity to keep tourists flocking to Florida as a vacation spot. Warnings for wind and storm surge have been issued for that area. There's always a low-end risk of severe storms or a quick spin-up tornado on the left (eastern) side of tropical systems, which will be the case for eastern Alabama.
