1st named storm of 2018 Atlantic hurricane season expected to impact Carolinas

Tropical Storm Alberto

"A prolonged period of heavy rainfall potential is expected across the area as Alberto moves northward through the Gulf of Mexico and pulls deep tropical moisture over east Central Florida", Weather Service forecasters said.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said Friday.

Torrential rain, flooding and thunderstorms are likely across the Caribbean, the Gulf states and southern U.S. states even if a tropical storm does not materialise.

The immediate Tampa Bay area could experience tropical storm-force winds by Saturday morning, forecasters said, and conditions along the coast could become unsafe with high winds and rip currents.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the subtropical storm was located about 55 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, and about 195 miles southwest of the western tip of Cuba. It's expected to continue moving north through the Gulf over the weekend, with gradual strengthening.

Whether or not the disturbance develops into something more, South Florida will likely see a lot of rain and wind over the next few days.

Nadal, Djokovic romp into Rome quarter-finals
Next up for Ramos-Vinolas is a meeting with Novak Djokovic, who eased past Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4 6-2. Cilic will play 10th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta, who beat Aljaz Bedene 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.

From Friday through Tuesday, parts of the Southeast may see 6-12 inches of rain.

Those who live near flood-prone areas should watch the forecast closely.

A FLOOD WATCH will take effect Saturday afternoon and extend through Sunday.

The National Hurricane Centre said the early development does not necessarily mean we are in for a busy hurricane season.

Almost all the damage came from three major hurricanes - Harvey, Irma and Maria. Please begin to prepare for tropical impacts from this system if you live along the Gulf Coast.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria whipped the Caribbean, while Irma cut a path of destruction from St. Martin into Florida. It's considered among the worst natural disasters to hit the islands.
