Nuclear deal a 'big lie'

Breaking down Trump's decision to leave the Iran deal

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has acknowledged that the Iran nuclear deal "certainly has weaknesses" but says it should be preserved.

O'Sullivan delivered a rousing endorsement of the deal and expressed his profound dismay at Trump's May 8 decision to withdraw from it.

"Other members of the Iran deal are going to have to make their own decision".

He says the European powers believe the USA should work to prevent Iran's nuclear activities from returning to its pre-JCPOA situation, while it is no longer committed to the deal.

Reporters pressed administration officials on what it meant to leave the deal and whom Trump had consulted.

"We are on the right path to move forward", he said.

"That's not true. That's not true", the senior Trump official said. I have one today at 6:00.

At the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, a reliable opponent of the Iran deal, analysts were baffled. French diplomats said they also wanted to assess Iran's intentions in sticking to the deal, but also to see how open it was to serious talks on other Western concerns, including its ballistic missile programme and regional activities.

But bluster and Iran-bashing will not get us to a better future. Le Maire asked. "Or do we want to say we have our economic interests, we consider we will continue to do trade with Iran?"

Top Senate intel Dem says he supports Haspel
Joe Manchin (WV) and Joe Donnelly (IN). "I think Brennan did a good job in his position", Sanders said. So far, just two Democrats in the Senate have said they plan to vote in favor of Haspel.

First, about half the 2.3M b/d of Iranian export crude oil still goes to China, India and Turkey (about 1.2M b/d is exported to those three nations, according to Poten and Partners head of research Erik Broekhuizen) and will continue to do so after United States sanctions are re-imposed. Iranian hard-liners who always felt the agreement made too many concessions may be emboldened to restart nuclear enrichment, but they could risk airstrikes from the United States and Israel if they did so.

In other words, Europeans say the U.S. who has abandoned its end of the bargain can reap benefits under the deal, he noted.

"Remember how badly Iran was behaving with the Iran deal in place", he said. "The deal didn't push war further away, it actually brought it closer". They could risk losing access to the United States market and face fines if they choose to do business with Iran. On Sunday, Prime Minister Theresa May told Rouhani in a phone call Britain and its European partners will remain committed to the deal as long as Tehran continues to meet its obligations.

The accord had provided Tehran with relief from sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear programme. The stumbling block was the "sunset" clauses, which would allow Iran to resume fissile material enhancement within a decade. China is a contracting party to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action [JCPOA] and follows closely the developments of the Iranian nuclear issue.

The new agreement would supplant the Iran nuclear accord, which Mr. Trump formally abandoned last week but which the leaders of Britain, France and Germany have vowed to preserve.

"European businesses no longer have those investments available, their trade is winding down", he said.

"I'm not the national security decision maker", Bolton said, adding that Trump "makes the decision and the advice that I give him is between us". There is absolutely no reason to think that the Trump administration on its own could reach a better deal than the Obama administration did by working in concert with the worldwide community.

He said that Russian Federation had confirmed its readiness to respect the deal following a meeting with Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, and that the two countries would do everything they could to save the landmark deal.
