IS involved in assault on police headquarters in Riau, Indonesia

A group of policemen stand guard at a police office in Surabaya Indonesia

Four attackers wielding samurai swords targeted a police station in western Indonesia on Wednesday morning, killing at least one officer, police said.

One of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body, the report said.

"The one who escaped has been captured and secured at Pekanbaru police station", Wasisto said.

Television images showed what was reportedly the bodies of four suspects lying on the ground.

One local journalist at the scene sustained minor injuries in the attack, police said.

The "Islamic State" (IS) group, which is supported by as many as 30 Indonesian militant groups, quickly claimed responsibility for Wednesday's assault through its Amaq news agency.

This week's bloody violence is putting pressure on lawmakers to pass a stalled security law that would give police more power to take pre-emptive action against people suspected of planning terror attacks.

A lot of teams were slated to bring in major upgrades to their cars after the conclusion of the initial segment of the season. Williams' Lance Stroll was first out on track while Vettel was quickest in the early stages setting a time of 1:17.606.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

The attacks have put Indonesia on edge as the world's biggest Muslim majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.

Media were at the station to cover a press conference about a drug bust when the attack happened.

Two policemen were injured by the sword attacks and another was killed after being hit by the minivan which was trying to escape from the compound of the headquarters, he added.

In the ensuing chaos, at least two suspected terrorists, both wearing balaclavas, were spotted getting out of the auto wielding sharp weapons and attacking police officers.

The incident took place at around 9am, when a white MPV crashed into the gate of the police headquarters.

The church and earlier police station attacks were likely motivated by the arrest of JAD leaders, authorities said.
