American Embassy Officially Opens In Jerusalem

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has denounced the choice of a "religious bigot" to deliver the blessing at the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian organizers of the protest movement expressed thus the disagreement with the expulsion by the Israeli authorities.

The military said its troops came under fire in some areas, and said protesters tried to break through the border fence.

But Diana Buttu, a Ramallah-based analyst and former advisor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the U.S. might be making a mistake and conflating the region's leadership with its streets.

The pair will attend an official opening ceremony of the embassy on Monday, while most European Union ambassadors are expected to boycott the event.

They said the Israeli military would "continue to operate against those who wish to harm Israel's security".

Nonetheless, Hagee's advice that he will receive "political immortality" - presumably because of support from what is grotesquely called "the Jewish lobby" as well as evangelicals - is probably ringing in Trump's ears.

It is thought that protesters could try to enter Israel this week because of the embassy move.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza says that that the number of Palestinians killed by Israel on the Gaza border has risen to 52.

DW Correspondent Dana Regev, reporting from the ceremony, said in a tweet that security has been stepped up in Jerusalem ahead of the US Embassy's opening.

He added that the Trump administration has "become part of the problem" and that the USA president's Mid-east team is unqualified.

BBC reports that top U.S. officials will attend the event, including President Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner.

Workers prepare the stage for the opening ceremony of the new US embassy in Jerusalem on May 13, 2018.

In Gaza, the Hamas-led protest was meant to be the biggest yet in a weeks-long campaign against a decade-old blockade of the territory.

Security at the United States facility has been visibly beefed up of late, with security guards permanently on guard on the street outside and several Israeli border police jeeps parked nearby.

The embassy inauguration was due to occur at 4pm (8pm in Thailand). The sides have largely observed a cease-fire since the 2014 war - their third in a decade.

The National Commission for the marches in Gaza called earlier for the largest ever masses of protests and rallies in eastern Gaza Strip.

Israeli snipers have killed 37 Palestinian protesters inside the Gaza Strip so far on Monday and hundreds more were wounded, either from gunshot wounds or other injuries, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. Hamas said four members, including three security men, were among the dead Monday.

Throughout the day, sirens wailed as the wounded were carried to nearby ambulances.

That wasn't the view of Shaath, a Palestinian elder statesman, as he gazed up at a rock-strewn slope where gardeners planted hundreds of red, white and blue pansies.

Other Palestinians killed by Israeli gunfire were identified as Musab Yusuf (28), Ubaidah Salim (30), Muhammad Ashraf (26), Eiz alDin Musa (14), Eiz alDin Nahid (23) and Belal Ahmed (26). Nakba Day marks when 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled their homes during the 1948 war and its aftermath, and Israel's refusal to allow their return, creating the Palestinian refugee problem.

Protester Mohammed Hamami, a 40-year-old civil servant, attended the march with his mother and five children.

But in the real world of Middle Eastern politics, as evangelicals treat the region as a playground and Hagee and Jeffress pray at the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem today, the prospects of what Trump once on the campaign trail called "the ultimate deal" seem more diminished than ever. Black smoke from tyres burned by demonstrators rose into the air at the border.

On Sunday evening, the IDF released an English-language video about Hamas's plans for Monday, warning that the terrorist group wants to "carry out a massacre in Israel".

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed, as its "eternal and indivisible capital" in a move that has not won worldwide recognition.

Palestinians, however, see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut ties with the Trump administration and declared it unfit to remain in its role as the sole mediator in peace talks.

The meeting will focus on "ways of countering the illegal decision by the United States to move the embassy to Jerusalem", the organisation's deputy secretary general for Palestinian affairs, Saeed Abu Ali, said.

The Trump Administration is set to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem Monday, formally breaking from decades of established American policy and worldwide practice in a move that USA officials say will create greater regional stability. Paraguay is to follow suit later this month.
