Ireland set to make Test splash when sun appears

The match against Pakistan at Malahide had to be abandoned

No longer just constrained to the one-day game, Ireland's enthusiastic fans will at least get four more shots at enjoying Test cricket for the first time.

An expectant crowd of nearly 6,000 filled the temporary stands in anticipation of witnessing a piece of sporting history, with Tim Murtagh, the Middlesex seamer, delivering the historic first ball - and it wasn't without drama.

Former England global Boyd Rankin (1-7 off seven overs) had the honour of taking Ireland's first-ever Test wicket with Azhar (4) edging him to second slip.

Delivered by Middlesex bowler Tim Murtagh, Pakistan opener Azhar Ali took a single off it but in the process, opening partner Iman ul-Haq was injured. Non-striker Imam-ul-Haq, like Faheem making his Test debut, found himself sandwiched between wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien and Kane in a heavy collision as he scrambled to complete the run.

The 22-year-old was left flat on the ground and needed several minutes' treatment on the field, but he recovered to face the second ball of the match, with Imam playing and missing.

Imam is the nephew of Pakistan selection chief and former Test batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq and his inclusion in the squad provoked allegations of nepotism.

Their partnership extended to 109, and Pakistan's to 268 for 6, before umpires had to call off play due to bad light.

North Korea releases three USA citizens in run-up to Trump summit
Kim, a naturalized USA citizen, was born in Jilin, China, one of the provinces that borders North Korea and is ethnically Korean. President Trump said he will announce the time and place for his upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un "within three days".

Barely had the crowd's cheers subsided, then Pakistan were 13 for two off the very next ball, with Imam lbw for seven to a Murtagh delivery that came back into him.

Pakistan team is in good form as it won the tour match against Northamptonshire with 9 wickets.

But, in hindsight, given what the forecasts had predicted, both teams, especially Ireland, would be happy with the amount of cricket that eventually took place. Shafiq square-cut Kane for four, with left-hander Haris Sohail glancing Stuart Thompson for a legside boundary.

Murtagh, Rankin and Stuart Thomson bagged two wickets each and reduced Pakistan to 159 for 6 at one stage, and looked in a serious threat of getting bowled out by the end of day's play.

Shafiq went on to complete a 107-ball fifty when he pulled Rankin for a single.

They didn't have to wait long for a second as Murtagh struck next ball, trapping Imam leg-before for seven on his Test debut with a ball that would have hit middle stump.

Rankin and Thompson removed Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed respectively before Ashraf and Khan steered Pakistan to the close.
