South Korean, US officials plot path to Trump-Kim nuclear summit

Trump Greets 3 Americans Freed by North Korea

President Donald Trump has already outdone his predecessors on North Korea by pulling together a global coalition to tighten sanctions, winning the release of three US prisoners and arranging for a summit with Kim Jong Un.

The location and date of the landmark meeting were announced in a presidential tweet just hours after Trump welcomed to the United States three American prisoners released by Pyongyang.

The North's announcement came days after Washington announced that the historic summit between Kim and Trump would be held on June 12 in Singapore.

Pompeo said there would need to be "complete" and "verifiable" denuclearization, suggesting it would involve inspections to ensure the North's compliance.

Reporters from China, Russia, the United States, Britain and South Korea would be allowed to "conduct on-the-spot coverage in order to show in a transparent manner the dismantlement of the northern nuclear test ground", the foreign ministry statement said. The two men will shake hands on neutral ground as Trump tries to convince Kim to give up his nuclear weapons, but human rights advocates say the president needs to push for even more.

Appearing with the freed Americans on Thursday, Trump said he and Pence had spoken to the family of Warmbier recently.

Trump and First Lady Melania walked up the stairs to board the plane after it landed at Joint Base Andrews, a military base outside Washington DC, at around 2.40 am (0640 GMT).

Their release comes before an expected meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. North Korean state media said the men, one of whom had been held since 2015 and the other two since a year ago, were arrested either for subversion or "hostile acts" against the government.

"I want to thank Kim Jong Un", Trump said on the tarmac.

China looks forward to positive results from the meeting, said the spokesperson, adding that important steps must be taken to promote the denuclearization of the peninsula through political solutions to realize long-term stability in the region. It is imperative to draw up a road map for denuclearization and continue applying pressure on North Korea until the country actually implements it. Trump must not rush simply in pursuit of success.

"We're not talking about sanctions relief at this point", Kang said. According to South Korean media, he had been involved in humanitarian work in the North.

"The third detainee, 60-something Kim Dong Chul, of Fairfax, Va., was sentenced to 10 years in prison and hard labor in April 2016".

Their luck turned when a Korean-American pastor raised money to bribe North Korean officials for their release.

In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearization" has, for years, been a byword for USA troop withdrawals from South Korea.

Singapore is the likely site for the historic meeting, late this month or in early June, and Pompeo says it would last one day and possibly a second.
