In inter-planetary first, NASA to fly helicopter on Mars

Уфологи обнаружили на Марсе мертвого пришельца принесенного в жертву

The primary goal of the Mars 2020 rover is to investigate a to-be-determined ancient environment on Mars that could have hosted past or present-day bacterial life.

NASA sends the first helicopter to space on its next mission to Mars, due to be launched in July 2020.

The helicopter is meant to demonstrate the viability and usefulness of such aircraft on Mars, NASA said, with potential roles as a low-flying scout or to reach locations inaccessible from the ground.

The helicopter is meant to show the viability and usefulness of aircraft on Mars, NASA explained, together with potential roles because of low-flying scout or to attain areas inaccessible out of the floor.

The Mars Helicopter's development began in 2013 at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California.

"A remote-controlled helicopter to Mars Helicopter, created to fly in the rarefied atmosphere of the red planet, weighs 1.8 kg and the size of a small ball".

Under development at JPL since August 2013, the Mars Helicopter uses electrically-driven counter-rotating blades specially created to handle the thin Martian air thanks to their wide span and rotation of 3,000 rpm, which is 10 times faster than their Earth counterparts. Solar cells will charge its lithium-ion batteries.

"The altitude record for a helicopter flying here on Earth is about 40,000 feet".

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket debuted today a flawless satellite launch
The first crewed flights of the Block 5-Dragon system could come as early as this year, SpaceX representatives have said. As such, Block 5 rockets have been created to conform to NASA's crew-carrying requirements.

Due to the atmospheric difference between Earth and Mars, the helicopter will be the equivalent of 100,000 feet in the air at home when it is on the ground on Mars.

The helicopter will be brought to Mars attached to the belly pan of the Mars 2020 rover. The robotic explorer will use its arm to remove the helicopter and place it on the ground before moving to a safe distance.

"We don't have a pilot and Earth will be several light minutes away, so there is no way to joystick this mission in real time", said Aung.

The red planet is getting a helicopter. On its first flight, the helicopter will make a short vertical climb to 10 feet (3 meters), where it will hover for about 30 seconds.

The potential addition of Mars Helicopter, though, has not necessarily been warmly accepted by the main Mars 2020 mission.

According to Bridenstine, the success of the "marscopter" may enable more ambitious missions in the future. The rover is created to carry out geological studies and ascertain the habitability of the Martian environment, NASA said.

The craft will undergo a 30-day test campaign once it reaches the Red Planet to demonstrate the viability of travel above the Martian surface with a heavier-than-air craft.
