Israeli PM Netanyahu says Iranian strikes from Syria "crossed a red line"

This frame grab from video provided on Wednesday May 9 2018 by Syria News shows people standing in front of flames rising after an attack on an area known to have numerous Syrian army military bases in Kisweh south of Damascus Syria on Tuesday. The

An Israeli military spokesman said the rockets were fired by Iran's Quds Force, a special forces unit affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, marking the first time Iranian forces have ever fired directly on Israeli troops.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson condemned Iran's attacks, urged Iran to refrain from further actions that could destabilize the region, and called on Russian Federation to pressure Syria to work toward a broader political settlement.

At the start his meeting with Putin, Netanyahu remarked on the commemoration of the Soviet Union's victory against Nazi Germany and compared the threat that Israel faces from Iran today. Israel accuses Tehran of seeking to establish a foothold on its doorstep. Iran has vowed to retaliate. "Yesterday, we didn't succeed", he said referring to the 20 missiles fired at Israel. Israel, as it has typically done in similar incidents, neither confirmed nor denied a role.

"It's unacceptable that Assad sits quietly in his palace and rebuild his regime while allowing Syria to be turned into a base for attacks on Israel", he said.

"We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told a security conference. They are trying to transfer forces and deadly weapons there with the explicit goal of attacking the State of Israel. "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood".

Israel said it was in retaliation for Iranian rocket fire from the Quneitra area that it launched missile strikes on Iranian military infrastructure in Syria. The observatory said the attacks killed 23 fighters, including five Syrian soldiers.

Tehran, for its part, has yet to officially react to the strikes. According to the IDF, its strikes targeted the Russian-made long-range SA-5, also known as the S-200, which is the predecessor of the more advanced S-300 and S-400; the Russian high altitude SA-2, or S-75; the Russian short- to medium-range SA-22, also known as the Pantsir-S1; and the SA-17 medium-range air defense system, also known as the Buk. Israel and Russian Federation also set up a mechanism in order to avoid direct conflict over their competing interests in Syria. The explosions were followed by sporadic fire into the early morning hours.

Air France-KLM shares drop following chief's resignation
He added: "The challenge is the survival of Air France, the development of a company to which we are all attached". The government's response is seen as a test of labour reforms launched by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported: "The Syrian air defenses are confronting a new wave of Israeli aggression rockets and downing them one after the other".

Iran is a Syrian ally, and its military has been supporting President Bashar al-Assad. "It's very worrying and a source of concern".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the overnight attacks by Iranian forces and called on Iran to contribute to de-escalation of tensions in the region.

Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon demanded the United Nations Security Council condemn Iran on Thursday after claiming its forces launched a missile attack on the Golan Heights from Syria. Four were shot-down by Israel's "iron dome" interception system.

The air force planned to review Thursday's raids, the official said. "The Iranians declare their intention to #attack us". Its resources in Syria pale in comparison to the high-tech Israeli military and it could also be wary of military entanglement at a time when it is trying to salvage the global nuclear deal. Six years later, Syria would invade during the Yom Kippur War, and both Israel and Syria agreed to pull their forces back to the purple line in 1974.

Late Tuesday, Syrian state media said Israel struck a military outpost near the capital of Damascus.
