Canada's Emergency Alert System Fails First Quebec Test

Emergency Alert Test Takes Place Monday

A new emergency alert system is being tried for the first time.

There was no signal in Quebec and it was being blamed on a space that was incorrectly included in the coding.

Initially wireless alerts will only be used for tsunami threats, but the province is considering expanding them to include other hazards and emergencies.

The test alert, broadcast by Canadian wireless service providers, is created to appear on all mobile devices, such as phones, tablets and smartwatches that are connected to a 4G LTE network and have wireless public alert software installed.

The system is still scheduled for the rest of the country this week, with tests planned for BC and AB on Wednesday afternoon.

Pelmorex, the system provider in charge of managing the wireless device alerts, is working to correct the problem as soon as possible, said Thomas Blanchet, spokesperson for Quebec's Public Security Ministry.

Depending on device settings, those with compatible phones connected to an LTE network can expect to hear a tone similar to an ambulance siren or feel a vibration for about eight seconds. Devices turned off during the test period will not receive an alert.

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram suspended four games
The suspension could prove even more costly if he was angling for a lucrative contract extension before the season kicked off. However, it was expected to remain a 1A/1B situation after that worked out so well previous year for the NFC South champions.

The test will come through compatible mobile devices and tablets, as well as through television and radio.

Alerts could be broadcast in response to numerous life-threatening matters involving fires, natural disasters and even terrorist threats, and be transmitted via cellphone, television and radio.

The alert messages are distributed by cell broadcast technology and can not be tracked.

For those who did receive the alert in Ontario, it looked similar to this.

It will be happening at 1:55 p.m. when school is in session.

Some Canadian service providers sent text messages to subscribers last week alerting them to the tests, which are mandatory and may require users to acknowledge a message before they can resume normal use of their devices.
