Strong 4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Coachella Valley Awake

San Diegans were slightly shaken this morning as a 4.5 magnitude quake tousled a sleeping county.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor struck at 4:49 a.m. PDT Tuesday morning at a depth of about 8.5 miles.

Cabazon is just over 100 miles north of San Diego and is best known for its giant whimsical dinosaur structures and outlet mall.

USGS also reports a 3.2 magnitude aftershock was reported moments later.

According to the USGS, the quake was felt across a wide swath of the region, from the Inland Empire west to Los Angeles and Orange County.

Geologists said the shaking was felt by scores of people in Escondido, Vista, Oceanside, Borrego Springs, Camp Pendleton, Bonsall, Valley Center, Carlsbad, Encinitas, San Diego, El Cajon and Jamul.

Shortly thereafter, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher announced that the region had just experienced an quake and directed firefighters to remove all trucks, engines and other apparatus from stations across the city. It was initially reported to have a preliminary magnitude of 4.6.

Residents from across Southern California and the northernmost region of Mexico went online to report the quake, or to discuss it and crack jokes on social media.

Others thought the earth tremors must have been closer to their location based on their strength.
