Stephen Hawking's final paper was just published - and it's mindblowing

Stephen Hawking's final theory sheds light on the multiverse

But Stephen Hawking's scientific partner Professor Hertog, theoretical physicist at the University of Leuven in Belgium, has now announced a "significant departure" from the theory, saying: "There is a single, over-arching question behind all this work by Hawking".

"The usual theory of eternal inflation predicts that globally our universe is like an infinite fractal, with a mosaic of different pocket universes separated by an inflating ocean", Hawking said past year.

"The usual theory of eternal inflation predicts that globally our universe is like an infinite fractal, with a mosaic of different pocket universes separated by an inflating ocean", Hawking said in late 2017. If there aren't infinite universes, and simply many, what laws govern how many and which ones? And just before he died, he left us with one last theory to turn our heads inside-out: a revision of the multiverse theory known as eternal inflation.

Instead, Hawking and Hertog propose a new model of the multiverse that's much smaller, based on string theory, and much more measurable.

The new Hawking-Hertog theory states that, from the Big Bang (the moment of formation of the cosmos), the Universe was formed as a vast and complex hologram, so that other universes very similar to ours can exist. "I personally felt this might be the conclusion of our journey, but I never told him".

The final version of the paper was submitted just 10 days before Hawking died in March.

Eternal inflation has been used to support the idea of a multiverse, or multiple universes beyond our own.

BP Bounces Back Continues As Profits Jump 71 Percent
The company's debt will "come down as the year progresses, quarter on quarter, especially given where prices are today". The company then faces charges of about $2 billion next year, and then more than $1 billion a year out past 2030.

In his new theory, which he worked on with Belgian colleague Professor Thomas Hertog, Hawking has managed to overcome the problem of combining the premises of General Relativity and ongoing inflation, and that, friends, is through a variation of the holography theory. He says these ripples in space-time might carry subtle hints that could help physicists determine which theories about the Big Bang are more likely - but we'll need the right tools to find them.

This resolved a difficulty with Einsteins theory that suggested that the universe began almost 14 billion years ago but said nothing about how it began.

"The most promising observable [phenomena], when it comes to our universe, are gravitational waves ... that are probably generated at the big bang, basically", he said in a video explaining the paper.

"We predict that our universe, on the largest scales, is reasonably smooth and globally finite".

Hertog explained that the new paper "reduces the multiverse down to a more manageable set of universes which look alike". Physicists could find the evidence of other universes using tools created to measure ripples in spacetime which is also known as primordial gravitational waves.

This is because Einstein's theory of general relativity breaks down on quantum scales. The kind of laws that emerge depends very much on the physical conditions at the Big Bang.
