Son of Pakistani bus driver Sajid Javid appointed Britain's home secretary

Amber Rudd Home Secretary Diane Abbott deportation targets resign news lates

A rapid riser in the government, Mr Javid's first task was to deal with the fallout from the Windrush scandal - moves to deport legal but undocumented elderly Caribbean immigrants.

Sajid Javid is a Member of Parliament (MP) from Bromsgrove, and was previously the Secretary of State for housing, communities and local government.

Rudd was a strong supporter for staying in the bloc, and Javid will now replace her on key cabinet committees that will help decide the future of Britain's relationship with the European Union ahead of Brexit day in March 2019.

May will hope Javid, known for a passion for detail when business minister, can end continual criticism of the ministry.

Pakistani-origin MP Sajid Javid was Monday appointed as Britain's new Home Secretary, hours after his predecessor Amber Rudd resigned after admitting that she had "inadvertently misled" Parliament over the existence of deportation targets for immigrants.

The 48-year-old son of an immigrant bus driver pledged justice for those affected, telling MPs his own family could have been targeted. "I think that's what people want to see", said Javid, whose parents were born in pre-Partition India before migrating to Pakistan and then to the United Kingdom in the 1960s.

Rudd was forced to step down after a series of revelations in the Guardian about problems faced by Windrush generation residents, which culminated in a leak on Friday that appeared to show she was aware of targets for removing people who were in the country illegally.

The review, she said, will have "full access to all relevant information in the Home Office, including policy papers and casework decisions".

His appointment is widely seen as a way for British Prime Minister Theresa May to curtail the backlash from the so-called Windrush scandal, which brought to light the unfair treatment of Commonwealth citizens from Jamaica over a lack of citizenship documentation.

Mr Javid said the phrase "hostile" was "unhelpful and does not represent our values as a country", preferring "a compliant environment".

However, she failed to acknowledge that her hostile environment policy may have also had a severe impact on the Windrush generation, many of whom struggled to prove they were in the United Kingdom legally.

Her departure is unfortunate timing for May, whose centre-right Conservative Party faces potentially bruising local authority elections across England on Thursday. Only last week she had denied any knowledge of such targets, but correspondence published by the Guardian on Sunday showed Rudd had told Downing Street a year ago of an "ambitious but deliverable" target for an increase in deportations.

Ms May accepted her resignation, in what is a blow to the Prime Minister in losing one of her closest allies.
