Australia pledges millions of dollars in bid to save Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef Will Finally Cop $500M To Fight Off Current State

The half-a-billion dollar investment will go towards changing farming practices in order to improve water quality, and reef restoration research.

"It will ensure that we tackle the crown-of-thorns... and use the best available science to ensure our coral is resilient to heat and light stress".

However, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said that Australia was a world leader in managing and protecting its reef, as the government's Reef 2050 plan had been approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee as being the standard for the rest of the world to follow.

"The more we understand about the reef, the better we can protect it", Frydenberg was quoted as saying by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

But scientists and environmental advocates warn that the 1,400-mile-long Great Barrier Reef is already facing a full ecosystem collapse with global warming increasing water temperatures and acidity, leading to extensive coral bleaching.

The efforts will be Australia's single biggest environmental protection package and will be further detailed and officially confirmed in next month's budget.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's administration has also come under criticism for pursuing environmentally burdensome gas and coal projects rather than investing in renewable energies that emit fewer greenhouse gases.

"We welcome the investment in the #GBR, particularly funding for science to support reef resilience and adaptation, but the science advises us the #GBR is highly vulnerable to climate change", the academy said a statement on Twitter, using a hashtag to refer to the Great Barrier Reef.

"You can not protect the reef from puddles of warm water sitting over the entire northern GBR, together with all of the cyclones that came at the same time which were also climate-related".

Crown-of-thorn starfish have been discovered eating their way through coral on the southern end of the reef.

"Like reefs all over the world, the Great Barrier Reef is under pressure".

"Our elected representatives can't have it both ways", she said.

Frydenberg said he believed that the reef could overcome its many challenges with help. "These funds represent an unequalled opportunity to create a legacy of hope for future generations".

The reef is a critical national asset, contributing AU$6.4 billion a year to the Australian economy.

The Marine Park Authority will also receive an additional $42.7 million for its joint field management program over the next six years.
